Engagement (The Why)

The educator shared that the children in her group, whom were from grade 1-6,  seemed to be having some struggles negotiating with each other over rules in a game, over a toy or even an activity.  When a conflict arose she would encourage children to go to the negotiation station and talk it out while staying nearby for support. She had also made the colourful wheel (attached) so if children came to an impasse they could spin the wheel and it decides the outcome.  

Representation (The What)

This educator explained that she took some time to talk to the children in her group during  greeting time each day to go over each aspect of this strategy starting with, “Does anyone know what negotiation means?” Then moved forward from there using the attached pages as a visual to support oral information. She shared she also did short role plays with the children and  stayed close for support when needed.

When outdoors and a conflict arises,  this educator verbally guides the children through the steps and has made a second wheel for her outdoor time.

Fast forward three weeks when my next visit was,  this educator set up a Negotiation Station at her program with a mat on the floor and a presentation board with the visuals displayed on it. 

Expression (The How)

I was very impressed by how much this had changed the dynamics of the group and their ability to problem solve. I also observed older children in the group assisting younger children to problem solve.
